SUGAR CANE

Sugarcane is a crop of tropical and sub- tropical countries.

CONDITIONS REQUIRED
IMPORTANT PRODUCING REGIONS

Annual range of temperature between 21˚C - 27˚ C.

Annual rainfall of over 150 cm.

Deep, well – drained heavily fertilized soils.

Large labour force.

Latin America – Brazil and Cuba.

Asia – India, Pakistan, China, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines.

Other countries of south and eastern Africa and Australia.

SUGAR BEET


Sugar beet is a plant of the temperate regions and many countries produce their sugar from this source rather than importing cane sugar.

CONDITIONS REQUIRED
IMPORTANT PRODUCING REGIONS

Growing season of at least 180 days with summer temperature of 15 - 20˚C.

Annual rainfall 50 – 75 cm, with a dry cold autumn to allow th plant to develop its maximum sugar content.

Deep friable and fertile soils.

Dry firm land for easy mechanical harvesting.

Europe and America are the major producing regions in the world and contribute about 85% of the world production.
