Longitude: between 72˚ 35’ E and 83˚ 20’ E

Principal languages: Urdu, Kashmiri, Dogri, Ladakhi, Pahari, Punjabi, Baltic, Gojir and Dadri.

Capital: Srinagar (summer), Jammu (winter).

Situation: the state of Jammu and Kashmir lies in the extreme north of the country and is bordered by China in the north, Tibet in the east, Pakistan in the west, Afghanistan in the northwest, and Indian states of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh touches its borders in the south.

SRINAGAR


·         Capital of the state, is situated on the river Jhelum in the heart of the value of Kashmir

·         It is connected to Leh via the zoiji la Pass.

·         A big centre of wood carving, woolen textile, silk weaving and carpet making and handicrafts works.

·         Saffron (kesar) and Mushroom are the distinctive products raised in the Vale of Kashmir

·         A Rs. 6.5 crore software Technology park has been commissioned at Ragreth, Srinagar.

JAMMU

·         Winter capital of the state, is an important commercial, trade and timber collecting centre.

·         A Rs. 19 crore export promotion Industrial park has been Established at Kartholi, Jammu.

UDHAMPUR

·         An important city of Jammu province.

·         An important collecting centre for Saffron. Zira, Honey, etc.

ANANTNAG

·         Situated to the southeast of Srinagar at the foothills of the Per Panjal Range on the right bank of Jhelum.

·         An important woolen carpet manufacturing centre.

BARAMULLA

·         Situated to the west of Srinagar, on the left bank of Jhelum.

·         Leading apple growing district of state.

GULMARG

·         Situated to the southwest of Srinagar, at an average altitude of 2, 700 m.

·         Queen of all hill stations in India, is also named as ‘meadow of flowers’, because of its location.

LEH

·         Headquarter of Laddakh district, is situated only 6 km away from the right bank of the Indus River.

·         Leading town and an important market centre of Ladkh.
