Situation: Tamil Nadu is situated in the southeast part of Indian peninsula. It is bordered in the west by Kerala, in north by Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, in the east by Bay of Bengal and in the south by Indian Ocean.

CHENNAI

·         Capital city of Tamil Nadu.


·         Next to visakpatnam, it is the leading port of the east coast.

·         Chennai Refinery Ltd. Is located here and it has given rise to several petro- based units.

·         First cement factory of India was started here.

·         Groundnut oil, leather goods are the important industries of Chennai.

·         Its suburbs are important are important for cotton textiles, rubber industry, railway 
coaches, sugar, skin and oil refining etc.

·         In and around Chennai Global Auto majors Hyundai Motors, Ford, Hindustan Motors, mistshubishi, Ashok Leyland have set up their plants. 

ADVADI

·         Located near Chennai it is a centre for heavy vehicles manufacturing.

PERAMBALUR

·         Integral coach factory (ICF) is located here.

VELLORE

·         Known for Christian Medial College and Hospital.

KANCHEEPURAM

·         Situated about 80 km to the south west of Chennai.

·         Handloom cotton and silk fabrics are made.

NEYVELI

·         Situated at a distance of about 44 km from Cud lore Port.

·         Deposits of lignite oil.

·         Thermal power plant, Fertilizer plant, briquetting an carbonization plants are situated.

SALEM

·         Major producer of world class stainless steel.

UDHAGAMANDALAM (OOTY)

·         Beautiful, health promoting hill station and head quarter of Nigeria district.

COIMBATORE

·         Situated on the left bank of Noyil, a right bank tributary of river Cauvery.

·         Located near the palghat gap an links Tamil Nadu with Kerala through this gap.

·         Second largest town and the leading industrial centre of Tamil Nadu.

·         Most important cotton textile centre of Tamil Nadu, known as ‘Manchester of south India’.

·         An important tobacco producing area.

TIRUCHIRAPPALLI

·         One of the biggest hosiery centres in Asia.

THANJAVUR

·         Four – fifth of sown area is under paddy cultivation and is called ‘the granary of Tamil Nadu’.

·         Steel rolling mill, which gets natural gas from Narimanam, is also located.

DINDIGUL

·         Cheroot and cigars are made by hand.

KODAIKANAL

·         Situated to the northwest of Madurai

·         It has prestigious residential school which draw students from many countries of the world.

MADURAI

·         An ancient centre of Tamil literature and culture.

·         Situated on the Vaigai River.

·         Town is built around famous Meenakshi temple

·         Cotton textiles and wood carvings and statues made of bronze are important industry.

METTUR

·         An aluminum smelting plant of madras Aluminum company ltd (MALCO) is situated. 

SIVAKASHI

·         Known for its matchbox, crackers and printing industries.

RAMANATHAPURAM

·         Matches and cotton goods are manufactured.

TUTICORIN

·         Situated on the eastern coast of Tamil Nadu.

·         An important port, which handles mainly coal, salt, edible oil, iron ore and dry cargo.

TIRUNELVELI

·         Cotton producing region of the state.

·         Caustic soda, soda ash and ammonium chloride are also manufactured.

KANNIYAKUMARI


·         Southernmost place of the mainland country.
